René Goyes & Gerardo de la Cruz
Balanced, chocolate-forward regional microblend from Nariño, Colombia
Tasting Notes
Dark chocolate • Raisin • Pecan
This Mallama Regional Microblend is a carefully constructed lot combining coffees from two producers in Nariño, Colombia: René Goyes and Gerardo de la Cruz. Together, their coffees create a grounded, comforting profile with depth, sweetness, and balance.
Produced in the municipality of Mallama, this coffee benefits from a unique geographical position between the Andes and the Pacific. The interaction of cool mountain air and coastal influence creates ideal conditions for slow cherry maturation, resulting in greater sugar development and clarity in the cup.
René Goyes contributes 65% of the blend from his farm, Finca Giruz, located in Coataquer at 1,890 meters above sea level. Coffee farming in René’s life is a living legacy, passed down through three generations over more than 70 years. His work reflects tradition, consistency, and a deep connection to the land and community of Piedrancha.
Gerardo de la Cruz contributes the remaining 35% from Finca Capulí in Giruz, at 1,800 meters above sea level. Representing a new generation of coffee producers in Mallama, Gerardo began transforming his land in 2019 from corn and bean farming into a technified coffee operation. He manages the farm alongside his wife and young son, investing in coffee as the future of his family.
Both lots are processed using washed methods, with slight variations that contribute to the final cup. René’s coffee undergoes a 12–18 hour fermentation, while Gerardo’s is extended to 24 hours, adding subtle complexity. Drying is done in parabolic systems over 4–5 days to ensure stability and clarity.
In the cup, expect a smooth and approachable profile with notes of dark chocolate, raisin, and pecan. The acidity is soft and balanced, supported by a medium body and a clean, lingering finish. This is a versatile, everyday coffee that highlights both tradition and progress within Nariño.
