Get close to the cup.
Edmonton · Saturday, November 7 · 9:00am – 10:30am
Cupping is how coffee professionals around the world evaluate a coffee, and now you get a seat at the table. We'll walk you through the standardized cupping method step by step: breaking the crust, slurping, scoring, and describing what you taste. It's simple and hands-on, and it's the same process we use to choose the Colombian coffees we bring home.
Then we'll put your palate to the test with triangulation, a tasting game where you work out which of three cups is different. It's surprisingly fun, a little humbling, and a great way to sharpen your senses. No experience needed, just curiosity. This is your first step across the bridge into specialty coffee.
What You'll Learn
You'll learn the standardized cupping protocol from start to finish: how to set up a cupping, when to smell the dry grounds and the wet aroma, how to break the crust, and how to slurp and evaluate each cup. You'll practise scoring key attributes like acidity, sweetness, body, and balance. Through triangulation, you'll train your palate to detect subtle differences within the same coffee, a skill professionals use to check consistency and quality.
