With close to 50 years of coffee-growing experience, Pedro Nel Trujillo coffees have been enjoyed around the world. Don Pedro’s farm, Río Chiquito spans a total surface area of approximately 20 hectares, 19 of which are currently planted with mostly Caturra, but also with smaller plots of the varietals Colombia, Papayo and Pink Bourbon, which actively help keep Pedro Nel’s Caturra trees free from coffee-leaf rust.

Pedro Nel was born and raised on the banks of the Magdalena River, which runs right through Oporapa. His father was a seasoned and passionate coffee grower, and he taught his son, Pedro Nel, everything he could about the family’s chosen crop.

While Pedro Nel’s other two farms, El Jardín and San Isidro now belong to his daughter Raquel— Rio Chiquito is the highest plot he has cultivated. Sitting at 1,750 m.a.s.l, it is a far cry from the original plot he bought back in 1987, which sat right down by the river. This single lot was de-pulped and treated to a prolonged fermentation stage of 40 hours. The beans were then washed and put out to dry on a marquesina style dryer for 12 days.
